The conference will explore the topics of economic integration, security, cooperation in the field of higher education, energy, and will address the future of the EU’s strategy toward Asia._

Event → EU-China: Cooperation or Competition for Raw ● Brussels The issue of Sino-European economic and trade relations, in the context and light of a recent WTO ruling that found China's limitations on rare earth exports to be in breach of WTO rules, is the central focus of this policy forum. Europe's high-tech economies, and China's fast-growing economy are both thirsty for rare earth materials. Yet with China dominating the world's rare earth supply, issues of EU-dependence, of environmental standards, and of trade relations more broadly, are brought into play in this regard.
_Meeting → Ad hoc meeting - EU-China investment relations (EU Commission, DG Trade) ● Brussels
June 2011 a Civil Society Dialogue meeting was held to inform
stakeholders of the developments regarding EU-China relations on
investment and the consideration of a possible investment agreement. Mid
2011 the European Commission held a public consultation to gather views
from stakeholders regarding the future EU-China investment
relationship. Overall there was strong support for an EU level
initiative that could help facilitate investing in China and would help
improve legal certainty for European investors. A large majority of
respondents expressed a preference for a single EU investment agreement
replacing the existing 25 bilateral investment agreements.
Workshop → EU-Iceland-Japan Cooperation in Geothermal issues ●Brussels This Workshop will look at how to exploit the huge global potential of geothermal through increased cooperation in R&D, technology and knowledge transfers between the EU, Iceland and Japan.
Conference →Ageing Population & New Opportunities Associated for Businesses in Europe and Japan ●Brussels In the context of the 2012 - European Year of Active Ageing and Intergenerational Solidarity, and the fact that Japan is a couple of decades ahead of Europe in terms of fiscal, social and economic 'experience'; it would be useful to exchange best practices with Japan to determine the challenges of an ageing population and the opportunities this presents for businesses.
